Peter Rabbit

Dating Peter Rabbit Nursery-Ware

Below are some notes taken from an email conversation with the Wedgwood museum. It is very un-structured but it has been included because we felt it may be of some interest to a Wedgwood nursery-ware collector.

The Wedgwood factory first commenced to make Nursery-wares decorated with 'Peter Rabbit' subjects, under licence, from l949.

A leaflet issued in l962 which features the range of  Queen's Ware (cream coloured earthenware) items available with the motifs only, and no text.  These were issued either under pattern number NM.526 (with an additional edge line decoration) or NM.527 without the edge line.

For example:

  • 'NM526.  Cream Coloured earthenware.  Nursery set. Peter Rabbit lithograph.  Line in dark green.'

  • NM527. Cream Coloured earthenware Nursery-ware. Peter Rabbit lithograph on-glaze.  Not lined.'

Previous to this the Peter Rabbit pattern had been entered as pattern number CM 6522 in l955 - as 'Peter Rabbit lithograph. Plus carrots. No lines.'

Again in the same year, 'Peter Rabbit' had appeared under another pattern number CM 65l6 as - 'Cream Coloured earthenware.  Peter Rabbit lithograph as pattern CM 6466, no lining.

The range included a 7" Paris shaped plate, a Bute shape teacup and saucer, a porringer, a mug and two jugs.

Pattern number CM 6466 was the first pattern entry in l949 and is recorded as - 'CM 6466.  Cream Coloured earthenware. Peter Rabbit litho.  Dark green line.  Mug, porringer.'

In late l969 it was decided to introduce the 'Peter Rabbit Quotations' range.  This was intended to add to the appeal of text and quotations from the Beatrix Pottery books, to enhance the existing Peter Rabbit Nursery-ware range.  This range was to be further supported by advertising, and special showcards, which could be displayed at retail outlets.

Certainly, many other items have been produced under the 'Peter Rabbit' banner.  These have included miniatures - (teapot, coffeepot, teacup and saucer, plate, tankard, sugar box and cream jug, oval tray);  a full set of six thimbles;. Christmas Plates; paperweight; treasure chest; light-switch plates - to name but a few.
